Dear John,
measuring my morningly body temperature and making a table helped me not only in not becoming pregnant, but it also helped me accepting menstruation and not suffering that much about it. In a similair way, it seems as if one way to endure regular headaches is to have a diary and to note wether you had headaches or not. A way to endure pain is not trying to think of something different, but to concentrate on the pain (maybe this also partly explains how some masochists endure being tortured: by concentrating on the pain, thereby transforming the pain into an object of awareness, that is less painfull).
On the other hand, I believe repression sometimes to be a useful kind of behaviour: some problems solve itself, without us worrying about them, some problems are unsolvable, even with our worries about them. And sometimes thinking a problem over and over again increases the problem, or creates it, making you to the prisoner of the problem. Finding the right balance is the trick, I think. Teaching the technique of finding the right balance is much harder (or even impossible) than just to refer to one or two slogans, like the psycho-industry.
Yours,
Sofia
