Yuko Aoki & Julia
„Yuko Aoki und der Quadratdrache“ [“Yuko Aoki And The Squaredragon”], made 15.1.2005, original file 6800 x 6800 px.

I made this with ink, acryl, Julia fractal, ball pencil, graphic tablet and a lot of software.

The predecessor of this image (that is, a print of it; the original file resides on my hard drive) hangs in my room, and starring at it for a long time, I thought that it would be nice to rearrange things such that i) Yuko Aoki’s breast can be seen against a white instead of a blue background, ii) the image would have a square format, iii) there would be another dragon, iv) there would be a line of things moving towards the horizon/the bottom line, v) there would be something to indicate that it is summer. Not much work: the girl was already painted and could be re-used, and the fractal image was computed by the machine, with no work for me at all. I just had to add the parasol and the dragon.

Vanity
„Eitelkeit“ [“Vanity”], made 24.-26.11.2004, Scalable Vector Graphic

See my remarks on SVG. Inanimated, but may take some time to render.

8x8
“8x8”, made 11.-12.1.2005, Scalable Vector Graphic

This is actually the first svg animation here that uses a script to repaint the squares with random shades of green. All the other animations on the previous part of the gallery just used the svg animation element.

Seven Balls
“Seven Balls”, made 15.-16.1.2005.

Several versions of some kind of ball or rock. This is entirely done within the computer, with the aid of a graphic tablet.

Seven Balls
“Three Balls”, made 17.1.2005.

Another version, this time with a bit of color that comes from a scanned decalcomanie.

[RULER]

Square
„Quadrat“ [“Square”], made 18.1.2005.

We interrupt our program of different kind of spheres for some kind of non-sphere: a square.

Six Balls I
“Six Balls I”, made 18.1.2005.

Yet even more balls. These here and those to follow are made with nothing but OpenOffice.org’s Draw.

Six Balls II
“Six Balls II”, made 18.1.2005.

And still some more.

Another Green World I

Another Green World II Another Green World III
“Another Green World”, made 19.1.2005.

This one is the first to use a surface not provided with OpenOffice. The first image shows one sphere from different view angles. The second and third show different resolutions of the surface.

Three Spheres To Torture Euler
“Three Spheres To Torture Euler”, made 19.1.2005.

The surface of these balls is an Euler square of order ten, something Euler assumed to be impossible.

Twelve Balls
“Twelve Balls”, made 19.1.2005.

Well, twelve balls. The orientation and lightning model is the same for all twelve balls, just the surfaces differ.

Earth
“Earth”, made 19.1.2005.

Sky
“Sky”, made 19.1.2005.

Moon
“Moon”, made 19.1.2005.

An “Earth” without clouds and such a strong secondary light source is of course highly unrealistic. “Sky” and “Moon” actually show some cosmic nebula.

Four Balls
“Four Balls”, made 2.3.2005.

After five weeks of a complicated pneumonia, I felt strong enough again to construct four more balls.

Rhombic Dodecahedron Construction.

The following two images employ rhombic dodecahedrons. To learn more about them (and see more images), click the image above.

Hexahedron2Tetrahedron2Octahedron
“Hexahedron2Tetrahedron2Octahedron”, made Spring 2005.

Amazing Girl 1 Amazing Girl 2
“Amazing Girl”, made 26.3.2005, Scalable Vector Graphic.

Chr-Râ-Ch’Chi N’Ghú is an entymologist from another planet who went to earth to investigate some species of earth’s ants; unfortunately, her flying saucer crashed, and now she’s trapped on earth, since her distress signal will reach her home planet at the earliest in some hundred years.

She know calls herself “Amazing Girl” and uses her superhuman powers to help human kind.

Her looks are a bit misleading, since this is only her human-formed disguise; in her real form she is some kind of slimy blob with tentacles.

I drew her with ink, added some color in the computer and used a trace program to get the rough look.

Cheap Death Star I Cheap Death Star II
“Cheap Death Stars I&II”, made 8.2005

More marbles made with OpenOffice. The second version uses a surface generated with The Gimp.

Screenshots of Excel Sheets
Screenshots of Excel Sheets, made 8.2005

To be fair and balanced, here comes some art done with Microsoft’s proprietary software.

Spiral of Squares
„Quadratspirale“ [“Spiral of Squares”], made 19.8.2005, SVG

Spiral of Squares
„Quadratspirale“ [“Spiral of Squares”], made 19.8.2005, SVG

Again, some squares. The first one is a rectangle showing the proportion of the Golden Mean; you can interactively change its colors by clicking on it. With the second, you don’t even have to click: the image changes itself.

Ti-Logo
“Ti-Logo”, made 7.9.2005, SVG

Ti-Logo
“Ti-Logo”, made 8.9.2005, SVG

Instead of hard, cold squares, it is possible to create soft, round, tender forms using SVG (basically a repetition of the “spheres”-theme predominant on this page). The first version is some kind of trademark logo; one could imagine that it is for some kind of architecture bureau, or something like that. The second version displays the SVG code used to create the basic strokes of the logo.

The Gimp-o Variations
Summer 2005, 39 images, 1.99 MB

(Be warned, the link above loads 39 images with 1.99 MB in total.)

The page started with a variation of “Yuko Aoki And The Dragon”, and it also ends with it. Originally, I made 136 variations, but I guess few people would be willing to endure them all, so I selected 39 of them. They are, more or less, just effects you can make with The Gimp with a few mouseclicks.

The title is also a reference to one of Zappa’s nicest titles.

3.10.2005
“3.10.2005”, made 3.10.2005, 800x600 px

Some kind of postscript: since I uploaded the second half of this gallery (starting with the cheap deathstars) on 3.10., which happens to be the national holiday of Germany, I added some kind of flag.
