It is conjectured that there are several sexes because of the mitochondries. Mitochondries are part of every eucaryots, and it is conjectured, that they have been distinct cells; in every case, they have their own DNA. Of two seed cells, only one can have their own mitochondries, since the two seed cells would otherwise destroy each others mitochondries. With the slime mushrooms, there is a hierarchy. If two representants of the sexes N and M reproduce, with N unequal M, than only the mitochondries of Sex N survive, if N<M.

With most eucaryots, there are only two sexes, with sex No 1, that keeps its mitochondries while reproducing, usually is called "female", while sex No 2, which looses its mitochondries, is usually called "male".

The polycellulars therefor know only two kinds of reproduction: the sexual reproduction and the parthenogenese (=virgin reproduction, via autocloning). Bacteria on the other side, that means, non-eucaryots, knows also the conjugation, when two bacteriums (without gender) exchange genetic material, maybe, to enhance their resistence against virus.
